What are the differences between interior architectural practice and decoration?

Today, architecture has released its sub-branches, deepened and rooted in details. Although the resulting terms are old in meaning but new in practice, conceptual confusion has occurred. The concepts that are most confused with each other are the sub-branches of architecture; interior architecture and interior decoration terms. The general confusion of concepts is where the duties and responsibilities of these professions begin and end.

Various factors have been influential in the in-depth explanation of interior architecture and decoration terms in recent years. These studies contributed to the development of the education given in the field of interior architecture and increased the scope of the interior architecture profession. By changing the perception that interior architecture consists of decoration and furniture selection-layout, it has contributed to the interior architect’s approach to his profession from architectural and technical perspectives.

As a result, interior design and decoration departments in universities and institutes changed their names to interior architecture, reflecting the content of the education given more accurately. Such courses and university departments have rapidly gained popularity, educating students with the ever-increasing architectural education infrastructure, making it even more difficult to distinguish precisely the difference between interior architecture and architecture.

What is interior architecture? More importantly, what are the elements that distinguish interior architect, interior design and decoration from each other?

In the continuation of the article, I tried to briefly explain to you the different duties and responsibilities of all these professions.

WHAT IS INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE?

First of all, interior architecture is more of a subject than a profession.

The term interior architecture has emerged as a result of the increasing duties and responsibilities of interior designers in recent years. The infrastructure in interior architecture education is developed and the use of computer aided drawing programs (CAD) has become widespread. Today, lectures on the technical features of buildings are given in the interior architecture departments of many universities, blurring the line that separates interior architecture and architecture.

The characteristics of interior architects are also divided into subgroups within themselves. While some interior architects deal with decor, furniture and small projects, others continue their work with more technical issues in the light of aesthetic and artistic concepts in large projects. This is related to the education that the person receives and the work style he chooses.

The interior architect considers the design of the interior of a building, on a human scale, by considering all the factors that affect people; He is the person who designs materials, details, electrical infrastructure, installation, lighting, ventilation, ergonomics, function of the space and circulation in the space. The interior architect is the person who designs, monitors and manages the process from the design process to the completion of the project and the final touches.

The changing needs of modern society necessitated interior architects to have an architectural educational background. Especially in the retail sector, the building keeps its main shell and changes frequently and shows itself with new designs. Such renovation projects are the real working area of interior architecture.

In a simple and broad sense, interior architecture is the artistic and technical treatment of a building.

WHAT IS INTERIOR DECORATION?

The decorator is more concerned with the aesthetic concerns of a space. These people consider interior design only in an artistic sense. Decorators do not have knowledge and authority on the technical features of the building and renovation.

The decorator does not follow the project from the beginning in the formation of a building, they do not take part in its design, drawing and detail analysis. Persons dealing with decoration deal with issues such as floor, wall material, furniture selection, and the selection of artworks to be exhibited in the space.

All decorators and interior designers must have a grasp of the art of interior design to successfully complete their work.

SUMMARY

Interior architecture is the person who is aware of the elements that make up a building and solves the interior in the most correct way with its artistic and technical infrastructure. This process starts from the design of the building.
